Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was born in Talbot County, Maryland, on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. He was born a slave, the son of Harriet Bailey and an unknown white man, presumably his master. His birthdate and year are unknown although he celebrated it on February 14th.
